Woods knows better than most that the tournament is far from over. He was atop the leaderboard at consecutive majors in 1998 after the opening round and watched someone else hoist the trophy. 

Still, it was a powerful start. 

"There's a lot of guys out here that can hang with him when they're playing their best," Rory McIlroy said after a 71. "But the thing is, Tiger plays his best most of the time. And even when he doesn't play his best, he usually wins."

There is more excitement to a Tourney that is hotly contested than a match that has only a question of a course record in contention. Padraig and Tiger both opened with 5 Birdies. Woods leads by being Bogey free while Harrington suffered but one blemish in the round. I hope to see them fighting tooth & nail like this through Sunday!

I have never seen a Tournament where the final pairing from the previous week, starts the next one paired and remains paired all four days due to thier scoring. That would be unique perhaps.

Based on strong sales figures year after year, Titleist has a solid case. And, in general, the reviews are also pretty favorable.

Dave Koster, a reviewer at TheSandTrap.com, said he’s been playing Titleist golf balls since the latter days of the Balata and first generation of Professionals.

Koster called himself “a loyal customer” who has been tempted once or twice to switch to other manufacturers but not made the jump. He said the newest update to the 2009 Titleist Pro V1 will keep his business for the foreseeable future.

“The only switch I can really conceive of making at this point would be from the Pro V1x to the Pro V1,” Koster wrote.

Of course, despite their overwhelming popularity, not everyone is a diehard fan of these Titleist golf ball models. A sampling of other comments around the Web indicated some were not as impressed by Titleist’s performance claims and others balked at the price.

Whether you’re a golf equipment fanatic or just a casual observer of the latest offerings and trends in golf clubs and accessories, the 2009 Golf Digest Hot List is a golf equipment smorgasbord. From drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, to irons, wedges and putters—oh, and bags and balls, too—the equipment gurus at Golf Digest break it down in their popular annual equipment ranking.

The Process

If you’re wondering how golf equipment experts rate, for example, Callaway drivers or TaylorMade irons, think Excel spreadsheets with thousands of data points, hundreds of pages of technical data from golf equipment manufacturers, scientists, a four-part judging criteria, and a two-week visit to a San Jose, California, resort for field testing.

The process is, in a word, exhaustive. Golf Digest evaluated the “universe” of golf clubs—471 entries, to be exact—and judged them across four weighted criteria: 1) performance (40%), 2) innovation (30%), 3) look/sound/feel (20%), and 4) demand (10%).

After all the facts and data were collected, the judges engaged in nine days of meetings that included 800 debates to arrive at the 116-club Hot List. Along the way, they ate a lot of take-out food.

Following is a peek at this year’s list.

Drivers

Golf Digest breaks down the golf drivers category into two parts: drivers over $350 and drivers under $350. Then it splits the two categories into gold and silver winners.

Three of the gold winners in the over $350 category are the Callaway FT-9, PING Rapture V2 and the TaylorMade r7 Limited.

No one is better than Callaway at using multiple materials, said the judges about the FT-9. Players like the look, balance and carry of the PING Rapture V2, which has a similar look to the PING G10. The TaylorMade r7 Limited has movable weights and features an Ozik shaft. Some said it produces the best feel of any club on the market.

Gold winners in the under $350 category included Adams Speedline, Callaway Big Bertha Diablo, PING G10 and TaylorMade Burner.

Irons

Irons were broken into three categories that correspond with playing ability and interests: game improvement, super game improvement and players irons.

Gold winners in the game-improvement category included Callaway X-22, PING G10 and TaylorMade Burner. One player said he could hit the Callaway X-22 irons blindfolded. Sign me up, he said. Callaway X-22 led in the Demand category, which is an assessment of reputation, interest, intrigue and excitement. The PING G10 is a long-time category leader, and the TaylorMade Burner irons really shined, leading in three of the four judging categories: performance, innovation and look/sound/feel.

TaylorMade also had a gold winner in the super game improvement category: the Burner Plus, which features an oversized clubhead and hefty offset to help get the golf ball in the air.

In the players irons category, Titleist AP2 rose to the top, along with TaylorMade Tour Preferred, Callaway X-22 Tour, Callaway X-Forged and PING S57 models, four among the total of six gold winners.

Putters

Arguably, there’s no golf club more important than the putter. Golf Digest took a close look at two main categories: blade putters and mallet putters.

Gold winners in the blade putter category over $200 included the Odyssey Black Series I #6, TaylorMade Daytona TP-KIA MA and Titleist Cameron Studio Select, which led in three of four criteria: performance, look/sound/feel and demand.

In the blade putter category under $200, top picks were the Odyssey White Hot Tour 1, two PING Anser models and the TaylorMade Daytona.

Gold winners in the mallet putter category included the Odyssey Black Series I 2-Ball, PING iWi Craz-E and TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider. And leading mid-mallet putters were Odyssey, Titleist Cameron and MacGregor models.

Bags

Hot List judges took a look at lightweight carry bags and “do it all” cart bags, selecting their 21 favorites. Leading the list of gold and silver winners were models from Callaway, PING, TaylorMade, Titleist, Bag Boy, Nike, Ogio, Sun Mountain, Wilson and Izzo.

One of the things that is drilled into the new golfer when they take lessons from a professional golf coach is 'keep your head still', but this is one of those things that is easier said that done. Even players on the professional circuit winning millions of dollars per year from golf tournaments sometimes have problems with this aspect of the game. Lets face it, when there is so much movement going on through your arms, shoulders and torso, keeping the thing that sits on top of it all still is quite a tall order.

The next time you watch a golf tournament on television concentrate on the head movement of several different players and you will see that everyone will have some degree of head movement, and some more so that others. However, the one thing that you will find they all have in common is that their heads will remain behind the ball all the way through the swing right up to the point of impact between the club head and the ball. During their back swing you see some head movement but it will still be behind the ball when it is hit. You should try and follow this example and at the same time try and keep your head movement down to as little as possible. However, when you are playing for real, you shouldn't be concentrating on your head movement. Mastering these techniques is something for the practice game to the point where once it is mastered in practice it will become second nature the rest of the time.

Once the ball has been struck you should make an effort to watch the ball or turn towards its flight. This is something that again will come naturally as you complete your swing and allow the head to move with the shoulders.

As ever, you shouldn't feel you have to force any of these movements. Your golf swing is something that should be natural to you, so any adjustments you make should be made in small steps over a long period of time so as not to disturb your swing.

Coming off a magical 2008 Ryder Cup season, Kenny Perry continued to bask in the twilight of his career, as he split Augusta’s tightened fairways with his TaylorMade R9 Driver and time and again reached the putting surfaces with his TaylorMade Irons. Perry’s mastery included his putter, which helped him negotiate the large, sloping, slick greens and carry him to the 36-hole lead.

“My putter is a lot better. I'm actually very comfortable on the greens.” Perry said.

Paired with co-leader Chad Campbell during Saturday’s third round, Perry continued his stroll toward the record books. A two-under-par 70 gave him a share of the 54-hole lead with 2007 U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera.

Although he had downplayed the pressure of winning the Masters and his first major, Perry shared that at least one person close to him felt it was important.

“Dad has always said, ‘You need to win that Green Jacket,’” Perry said, laughing.

By the time Perry reached the 71st tee on Sunday, it looked like a foregone conclusion, as his TaylorMade clubs kept clicking. In fact, he had just stuffed an 8-iron shot at the par-3 16th hole and tapped in for birdie. The sentimental favorite had a two-shot lead with two holes to play.

Then the easy-going Kentuckian ran out of magic. A slightly errant approach shot led to a nervous chip and bogey on the 71st hole. A bunkered drive and a missed green led to another bogey on the 72nd hole. Bogey, bogey, playoff.

In the end, the Masters – and appointment with the record books – slipped from Perry’s grasp. While disappointed, Perry kept his head up in defeat, again mentioning his father.

“He just wanted me to win,” Perry said. “He wants the best for me just like I want the best for my kids. We’ll have a good conversation tonight.”

The Man from Cordoba

The 2009 Masters winner in a sudden-death playoff with Perry and Campbell, Argentinean Angel Cabrera made it clear his victory did not avenge the heartbreaking loss of fellow countryman Roberto De Vicenzo in the 1968 Masters.

“De Vicenzo had bad luck,” Cabrera said. “It’s not going to change what happened to him.” The two-time major winner added, “This win, to take back to Argentina, it’s going to help a lot with our game.”

Introduced to the game as a caddie at age 10, the Cordoba native’s pro golf success has been a lesson in persistence. Argentina is not a hotbed for professional golfers. And Cabrera, the son of a handyman and maid who split up when Cabrera was a tyke, was not born into the privileged class.

Yet this did not stop him from rising from lesser tours to become one of the world’s elite golfers. Cabrera’s hang-in-there quality was again on display at Augusta National Golf Club, especially as the light faded on Sunday afternoon.

The man who wasn’t supposed to win the 2007 U.S. Open by out dueling Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk wielded his PING golf clubs and impressive power game, including an improved putter, a PING i Series 1/2 craz-E B, to slip into a sudden-death playoff and escape with the Green Jacket.

“I was happy with my game and I had confidence. I was just trying to enjoy the moment,” said the man from Cordoba. “A lot of magical things happen. It’s simply the Masters.”

Clash of Golf Titans

All eyes and CBS-TV cameras were upon them. Despite being seven shots off the lead, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, paired together in the final round of a major for the first time since 2001, were a main attraction on Masters Sunday.

The winner of the first Senior Golf Open was Roberto De Vicenzo while William Campbell was in second place. The age limit was lowered to fifty just one year later to allow for more participants in the tournament. Arnold Palmer went onto win the second Senior Open at the age of fifty-one in Michigan. Miller Barber won the Senior Open in 1982, which was just one of his three wins for a Senior Open. The other two wins were for 1984 and 1985. As of 2002, there were a little over three thousand entries for the Senior Golf Open.

In 2006, Allen Doyle became the new oldest winner of the Senior Open at the age of fifty-seven, eleven months, seventeen days. The oldest winner before that was De Vicenzo at the age of fifty-seven years, two months and fifteen days. Don Pooley won his way into the Senior Golf Open by qualifying and went onto win the tournament in 2002.

Today, you will see only a three or four hole playoff if needed were in the past it used to be four playoffs of eighteen holes. There have only been a few times in the Senior Open history of a playoff occurring, once in 1981, 1983, 1988 and 1991 with the winners being Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player and Jack Nicholas respectfully.

In 2007, the Senior Open was played at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin where senior golf player Brad Bryant won the Championship. He had winnings of four hundred and seventy thousand dollars to take home with him. He did share his revenue with his caddies Tony Smith. The golf course designed Pete Dye was designed to attract PGA tournaments in the future. It proved to be a tricky course that is considered rugged terrain that does not have golf cart abilities.
