I have lived and played most of my golf in the deep South.  This makes it a bit of a challenge to walk a round of golf due to the heat and humidity.  During July and August the heat and humidity can make playing at all a challenge. Sometimes the best you can do is to tee off early in the morning and finish you round before it just becomes unbearably hot.

For this reason, I played golf for several years as an adult before I walked my first round.  I have always stayed in good shape and didn’t feel guilty using a cart since I knew I was getting my exercise elsewhere.  Then one summer evening a friend asked me to play nine holes after work and he almost always walked when he played.  I had an old pull cart in my garage storage closet, so I decided “What the heck, it can’t hurt me”.  And I gave it a try.

Since it was evening, even though it was summer, the heat wasn’t too bad.  It was hot, but not totally miserable.  Once I adjusted to that and put it out of my mind, I really began to enjoy this particular round of golf.  And several of the things had nothing to do with golf.

One of the things that was very enjoyable was the conversation.  When you are walking between shots instead of riding a cart, you have a little more time to relax and talk.  Talk about anything, golf, life, family etc.  It really wasn’t a huge amount of time, but it felt so more relaxing than rushing up to your golf ball in a cart and jumping out to take your next shot.

Another thing that I enjoyed was that I really seemed to pay more attention to the beauty around me on the golf course and surrounding the course.  Again, there really wasn’t necessarily a logical reason why I should have seen and enjoyed the surrounding landscape more, but walking seemed to relax me and I just seemed, for some reason, more in tune with my surroundings.

Now besides just enjoying the non golf setting more, there were some definite benefits to my golf game from walking.  I actually seemed to play better overall golf, both physically and mentally.  One thing that I noticed was that I was definitely more relaxed when I approached each shot.  I can’t attribute it to any one thing; I just noticed that as I came up to look at my lie and to think about what my next shot should be, I just felt more relaxed.  And definitely I have found that better golf shots come from being relaxed.

I have walked many times since that first round of golf and I always enjoy it.  I play better golf and I always seem to ask myself the same question,  “Why don’t I walk on every round of golf?”

Many large companies with many warehouses or factories also find a need for golf carts. When you are carrying your golf clubs with a carry bag it just is a more natural walk, which has to be healthier. Also, I think there is less fatigue involved when you can use a natural walk. Try taking a 5-mile walk with your hand stuck out behind you.

Buying And Maintaining Your Own Golf Cart

Golf carts are very versatile vehicles that can be put to many uses both on the golf course and off. For those who like to play golf very often, owning their own golf cart can save them lots of money over the course of several years as opposed to renting a cart each time that they play. And for others, golf carts can be a more sensible means of transportation for short trips around a retirement community or a large parking lot where a larger vehicle would simply be impractical.

So what are some considerations that you should have in mind before buying your own golf cart? Well certainly, one of the first questions you should ask yourself is whether you can be comfortable with either a new or a used golf cart. You can expect to pay more for a new golf cart, but on the other hand you will have a full factory warranty and will be able to know how it is cared for and maintained from the very first day on.

If a used golf cart will do the job for you, you may be able to save quite a bit of money overall. You can either choose to buy from a local golf cart dealer in order to get some type of repair warranty on your purchase, or if you're familiar with golf cart mechanics, you can save even more money by buying from a local individual party instead.

The cost of buying a new golf cart can run anywhere in the range of $5,000 - $10,000 or so. It all depends on what features and accessories you decide to install on the golf cart. And of course, the more add-ons that you install, the higher the price of the golf cart will be. If you're extremely frugal and eliminate all but the bare essentials, you may even be able to buy a new golf cart for under $5,000 or so.

As far as used golf carts are concerned, price ranges can fluctuate widely depending on the model, accessories, and condition or shape that the golf cart is in. Many used golf carts can be bought for just a few thousand dollars that are still in very good condition. But if the used golf cart is more than just a year or two old, it may be a smart move on your part to have a reliable, trusted golf cart mechanic inspect the cart before you actually make your final decision.

Maintaining your golf cart is not a difficult task in general. Most brands of golf carts are fairly reliable vehicles. If you choose a gas golf cart, then you can expect to have to do some ongoing maintenance including changing the spark plugs and air filters, and making regular oil and oil filter changes as well. Performing these maintenance tasks on schedule will go a long way toward making sure that your golf cart lasts as long as possible.

An electric cart is somewhat easier to maintain in general, usually requiring you to have to check the water level in the batteries regularly to make sure that it is sufficient. However, every few years or so, the batteries will have to be replaced altogether at a cost of around $500 or so.

Actually, maintenance costs for both gas and electric golf carts tend to work out to pretty much the same in general over time. And if a regular maintenance schedule for new golf carts is adhered to, you may expect to enjoy up to 10 years of faithful service from your golf cart, or even more.

The winner of the first Senior Golf Open was Roberto De Vicenzo while William Campbell was in second place. The age limit was lowered to fifty just one year later to allow for more participants in the tournament. Arnold Palmer went onto win the second Senior Open at the age of fifty-one in Michigan. Miller Barber won the Senior Open in 1982, which was just one of his three wins for a Senior Open. The other two wins were for 1984 and 1985. As of 2002, there were a little over three thousand entries for the Senior Golf Open.

In 2006, Allen Doyle became the new oldest winner of the Senior Open at the age of fifty-seven, eleven months, seventeen days. The oldest winner before that was De Vicenzo at the age of fifty-seven years, two months and fifteen days. Don Pooley won his way into the Senior Golf Open by qualifying and went onto win the tournament in 2002.

Today, you will see only a three or four hole playoff if needed were in the past it used to be four playoffs of eighteen holes. There have only been a few times in the Senior Open history of a playoff occurring, once in 1981, 1983, 1988 and 1991 with the winners being Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player and Jack Nicholas respectfully.

In 2007, the Senior Open was played at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin where senior golf player Brad Bryant won the Championship. He had winnings of four hundred and seventy thousand dollars to take home with him. He did share his revenue with his caddies Tony Smith. The golf course designed Pete Dye was designed to attract PGA tournaments in the future. It proved to be a tricky course that is considered rugged terrain that does not have golf cart abilities.

If you want a chance to watch the U.S. Senior Open when it comes to your town, you can buy advance tickets, walk around with your favorite players, and see how they fair in the tournament. Some of the courses they play are set up according to the guidelines established for the tours. This is just another way to see how the pros do it and how they apply different stances and what clubs they use to get distance and win the game. It is always a spectacular event for any city and golf course when the Senior Open comes to town.

But don't just watch Senior Golf.  PLAY!
